I just had a consultation with student fashion designers about the upcoming fashion show at Memorial Union. I’m doing make up on the models for this event, and I’m nervous and excited. I’m excited because the designers asked for, among other things, looks inspired by Amelia Earhart, Frida Kahlo, “Vaudeville Circus,” and an untold number of requests for smoky eyes. I have only a $100 budget to make up 28 models, but I think I’ll do okay. I’m a cheap asshole at heart and plan to remain true to that.
My one apprehension about the make up effects requested: I won’t be doing these looks to actual models. Yep, the girls are just everyday girls off the street. It sounds decent editorially, but the bottom line is that it’s difficult for some models to carry off extreme cosmetic effects let alone the average girl. Without cheekbones, how is a girl going to carry off a dewy beach look. With close set eyes, how can she pull off a Clara Bow look? I’m sure that everyone will look lovely though. I absolutely loved everything that the designers had to say and the few pieces that I saw were really fabulous.
In related news, I still have no sense of fashion. And I was drunk all day yesterday, in keeping with the Madison tradition of Mifflin Street Block Party. There’s a run in my tights and I hate Pride and Prejudice. I haven’t painted for months and it’s hard to french braid hair after a “power hour” and a few glasses of wine. And most importantly, Amelia Earhart is a stone cold fox.
